main image SANTIAGO, Initially Santiago de los Caballeros is located in the middle of the country and it is part of the Cibao Valley. It was founded by 1495 by European settlers and it has remained as the second largest city of the Dominican Republic with approx. 750.000 inhabitants. The city has many times been the capital of the Dominican Republic. The city is located in a mountain valley, the Cibao valley which is one of the most fertile areas in the Dominican Republic.

Santiago has a great importance for the Dominican Republics economic and social development, many young Dominicans are moving to Santiago because of its good Universities and Private schools.

Bars, clubs, and the park surrounding the monument provide recreation and fun attracting crowds of the city's inhabitants and tourists as well.
