SANTIAGO, Initially Santiago de los Caballeros is located in the middle of the country and it is part of the Cibao Valley. It was founded by 1495 by European settlers and it has remained as the second largest city of the Dominican Republic with approx. 750.000 inhabitants. The city has many times been the capital of the Dominican Republic. The city is located in a mountain valley, the Cibao valley which is one of the most fertile areas in the Dominican Republic.

Santiago has a great importance for the Dominican Republics economic and social development, many young Dominicans are moving to Santiago because of its good Universities and Private schools.

The Service Sector, Agriculture and Tax free zones are the largest source of income in Santiago. The culture of Tobacco, Sugar Cane and other goods make Santiago an economy center of the Dominican Republic. With its great commercial diversity and shopping facilities, it is well worth a day trip to Santiago especially if you are located at the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Santiago has its own international airport with several flights from and to the USA on a daily basis. Soon the largest and most modern hospital in the Dominican Republic will be inaugurated in Santiago.

Santiago has a blooming nightlife around the Calle del Sol and the Monument area. Dozens of Restaurants circle the center of the city making it an active nightlife area. Bars, clubs, and the park surrounding the monument provide recreation and fun attracting crowds of the city's inhabitants and tourists as well.
